Yellow pigments found in nature that constitute of the carotenoid group together with carotenes. They include lutein and zeaxanthin, that compose the retinal macular pigment. The carotenoids have photoprotective and antioxidant functions that may be useful in preventing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) onset or progression.
