A free-living amoebae found in the environment worldwide, mostly in soil and freshwater. It is a causative agent of respiratory tract and skin infections and vision-threatening keratitis, especially in contact lens wearers. It also causes granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE), which is a rare but fatal infection of the spinal cord and the brain. GAE usually occurs in people with a compromised immune system.
