An eye disorder where the upper eyelid lags, causing a greater than normal portion of the sclera to be visible with a downward gaze. Its presence indicates Graves’ disease (exophthalmic goiter). It can be caused by swelling of the levator palpebrae superioris (superior levator muscle), which is responsible for raising the upper eyelid.
