A gel-like, transparent mass found in the posterior compartment of the eye. It is enclosed by the hyaloid membrane and comprises water (99%), collagen fibrils, etc. During gestation, it helps to maintain the round shape of the eye in addition to nourishing the eye. With time, the vitreous shrinks and liquefies leading to vitreous degeneration and detachment.
