A surgical procedure for the removal of some or all of the eye’s vitreous humor to allow better access to the retina. The surgery helps in the removal of foreign bodies, removal of scar tissue, and treatment of macula holes. It also helps in repairs and laser repair for retinal detachment. An incision is made at the pars plana followed by a replacement of the vitreous gel with silicone oil, a gas bubble, or saline, to hold the retina in place.
