Occurs when proliferative membranes on the retinal and vitreous surfaces tag on the sensory retina, to cause physical separation between the retinal pigment epithelium and neurosensory retina. The separation may be caused by inflammation, neovascularization, or injury. It often occurs in people with diabetic disease, sickle cell, and other conditions associated with retinal neovascularization.
