Thimerosal

An organomercurial (organic mercury-based compound) used as a preservative in biological products, including vaccines and contact lens solutions, eye drops and cosmetics. It helps to inhibit the growth of germs and bacteria. Thimerosal has been proven to be harmless in low doses, although sometimes it causes minor reactions such as redness and swelling at the injection site in children.
