Any substance that can cause the abnormal development of an embryo or foetus, for example, alcohol, nicotine, and lead. These agents can lead to physical birth defects, decreased IQ levels and problems in the child's behavioural or emotional growth. They can also cause complications in pregnancies such as spontaneous abortions, miscarriages, and preterm labour. There are four types of teratogenic agents; infection, physical agents, drugs & chemicals, and metabolic conditions.
