A special type of holocrine sebaceous gland located in the tarsal plate of both eyelids. It opens directly on the margin of the eyelid, on which it spills its entire contents. It secretes an oily substance called meibum or sebum, responsible for keeping the tear film from evaporating. It also makes shut eyelids airtight and prevents tears from spilling onto the cheek.
