Liquefaction or collapse of the vitreous humor, causing a person to feel the sensation of floaters. It is usually a part of the aging process where the vitreous changes from jelly-like to liquid-like. The shrinkage causes the collagen fibers in the vitreous to form strands and can later lead to retinal detachment.
