It refers to bleeding into the space between the innermost central nervous system membrane (pia mater) and the arachnoid. It usually happens due to a broken brain artery such as an aneurysm rupture, which may have various causes including trauma, high blood pressure, connective tissue abnormalities, family history of or previous brain aneurysm, recreative drug use, etc. The condition is a medical emergency.
