Letters on the Snellen chart used to estimate visual acuity. The letters are made such that the stroke width and gap width (critical detail size) subtends a fifth (1/5th) of the overall height. To determine a person's visual acuity using the Snellen chart, the smallest line of the table one can read at a distance of six meters (20 feet) is identifed.
