A sight-threatening complication due to retention and oxidation of iron (foreign body) in intraocular epithelial structures such as the iris and ciliary body epithelium, retina, and lens epithelium. Clinical features include glaucoma, pupillary mydriasis, cataract, depressed electroretinogram amplitudes, heterochromia of the iris, and rust-colored anterior subcapsular deposits.
