A rare genetic disorder of the group of hemoglobinopathies. Genetic mutations in the beta sub unit of adult hemoglobin, increase the likelihood of erythrocyte deformation in a low oxygen setting. This results in distal tissue ischemia and numerous ocular and systemic complications. It is grouped into proliferative or non-proliferative.
