A rare condition where the retina is disconnected from the supporting retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer below, because of fluid buildup in the subretinal space, i.e., the space between the retina and the RPE. The disorder can affect both eyes and is usually caused by abnormalities that breach the blood-retinal barrier integrity such as trauma, infectious, inflammatory, infiltrative, degenerative, neoplastic, and vascular diseases.
