A yellowish, oily, lipid substance secreted by the sebaceous glands. A form of sebum called meibum is secreted onto the eye by meibomian glands (a type of sebaceous gland). It slows tear evaporation, prevents the sticking together of eyelids, and creates an airtight seal when the eyes are shut.
