The most severe form of blepharitis that occurs in older patients with a history of ocular symptoms. It results from a dysfunction of the meibomian and/or Zeis glands that cause greasy, waxy scales or crusts to accumulate along the margins of the eyelid. Other manifestations include chronic redness at the lid margins, dilated blood vessels, sties, and a chalazion.
