One of the signs of proliferative sickle cell retinopathy characterized by vitreous hemorrhage, retinal breaks, and rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. The blood vessels resemble the sea fan (the marine invertebrate Gorgonia flabellum), having assumed a frond-like configuration. The sea fan is found at the posterior border of nonperfused regions.
