A nerve block technique in which local anesthetic is administered into the retrobulbar space. The injection produces extraocular muscles akinesia by blocking the second, third and fourth cranial nerves, which prevents eyeball movement. The regional anesthesia also blocks the ciliary nerve providing sensory anesthesia of the cornea, conjunctiva, and uvea. It is most frequently used in cataract surgery.
