Widening of pupil size in low light conditions by the iris’ dilator muscles to permit the entry of more light into the retina. The pupil can dilate up to 8 mm in dim light, up from 1.5 mm. In medical circumstances, mydriatics are administered to allow dilation for ophthalmic examination. Certain medications and brain injury can cause abnormally dilated pupils.
