A unilateral or bilateral protrusion of the eyeball anteriorly out of the orbit, due to either normal human anatomy variations or as a complication of various health conditions. Graves' disease can cause a bilateral bulging eye while a unilateral proptosis can result from a sinus infection which has formed an abscess in the orbit.
