A vision-threatening ocular complication of sickle cell disease (SCD), affecting the iris, retina, choroid, and conjunctiva leading to hemorrhaging, sea-fan neovascularization, and fibrovascular proliferation. SCD results from a mutation in the HBB gene that encodes hemoglobin beta.
