A benzalkonium chloride (BAK) derivative used in some contact lens storage solutions and several eye drops such as anti-glaucomatous and artificial tears. However, recent findings indicate that the compound harms the cell membrane integrity and initiates cytotoxicity in the eye's surface cells. It tends to decrease conjunctival caliciform cell density, which reduces aqueous production sequence of the tear film sequence.
