An applanation tonometer to measure intraocular pressure (IOP) by blowing a puff of air at the cornea to flatten it. A slightly convex, silicone tip on the piston, rides on a stream of air indenting the cornea. The pressure pushing forward on the tip equals the IOP when both the tip and cornea are flat.
