A simple clinical method used to distinguish between macular and post retinal disease. The exam entails exposing the eye to a light stimulus (ophthalmoscope) for ten seconds. The duration taken for the acuity to get back to within one line of the pre-exposure acuity is then measured. A period above one minute is considered pathological.
