A muscular, funnel-shaped passage that connects the nasal and oral cavities to the larynx and the oesophagus. It is responsible for receiving food, water and air from the mouth and air from the nose. It comprises of the nasopharynx, oropharynx and hypopharynx (laryngopharynx).
