A tube that connects the middle ear cavity to the nasopharynx. It equalizes pressure between the middle ear and outside the body. It also drains mucus into the nasopharynx (helping to prevent ear infections) and protects the inner ear from loud sounds. The tube usually opens up during activities such as yawning, chewing, and swallowing.
