A modern cataract surgical procedure using an ultrasonic device to emulsify and aspirate the internal lens of the eye, followed by irrigation (replacing the aspirated fluids with a balanced salt solution). Irrigation helps to maintain the anterior chamber and cool the handpiece. Intraocular lens insertion immediately follows this procedure.
