A condition where the optic disc swells, owing to the buildup of pressure around or in the brain (high intracranial pressure). It can occur due to various causes including idiopathic intracranial hypertension, head trauma, hydrocephalus cerebral hemorrhage, spinal cord lesions, meningitis, intracerebral mass lesions, anomalies of the skull and impairment of cerebral sinus drainage.
