A chronic bone disease that leads to deformed bones, usually involving the skull, lower spine, pelvic and leg bones. It is among the most common bone diseases in the elderly, second after osteoporosis. The disorder is caused by abnormal breakdown and bone tissue regrowth that can result in weakened bones, leading to myopia, bone pain, deformities, arthritis and fractures.
