A sphincter muscle situated in the eyelids. It is arranged in concentric rings about the lower and upper eyelids. The muscle closes the eyelids and also helps to drain excess tears from the eye surface. The muscle's contraction draws the tears from the eye surface through the lacrimal apparatus to the nasal duct. It is a critical muscle in facial expression.
