A conjunctival infection that manifests within the first four weeks of a baby's life. It is often contracted in the birth canal of a mother infected with a sexually transmitted disease, especially chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can also occur due to chemical and viral processes.
