A form of hypermature cataract, formed when the cataract cortex liquefies which allows the dense nucleus to sink to the base of the capsular bag. There is an increased risk of spontaneous capsular rupture leading to a severe granulomatous inflammatory reaction and phacoantigenic endophthalmitis.
