A chronic, painful peripheral corneal ulceration of unknown etiology, that begins with intense inflammation and swelling in the episcleral and conjunctiva before spreading circumferentially and centrally. These crescent-shaped ulcers cause an opaque and edematous central cornea or destroy the corneal stroma replacing it with a fibrovascular membrane.
