A broad term that embraces many meibomian glands abnormalities, including congenital to acquired. Interference with the glands' function adversely affects the quantity and quality of the meibum secretion. Changes in tear film composition affect the eye surface health because it can cause inflammation, faster tear evaporation, hyperosmolarity and eye surface damage. MGD is linked to blepharitis and dry eye syndrome.
