They are epibulbar, developmental growths of normal adipose in an abnormal site. Normal tissue overgrows beneath the conjunctiva, next to the superior temporal orbit quadrant of the globe and tend not to affect the peripheral cornea. The abnormality may be extensive, sometimes involving orbital tissue, lacrimal gland, and extraocular muscle.
