A transparent, thickened, elastic, basement membrane containing collagen IV and laminin, that entirely envelops the eye’s lens and is essential in the biomechanics and structure of the lens. It provides informational cues to maintain lens cell phenotype as well as protect the lens from bacterial and viral infections.
