A laser that uses a single yttrium, aluminum and garnet (YAG) crystal. The laser is used in a broad range of applications, including ophthalmic, cardiac, urological, oral and orthopedic procedures. In ophthalmic surgery, the technique is useful in the treatment of acute angle-closure glaucoma by cutting a hole in the iris. It allows humor flow which leads to a decrease in the intraocular pressure. The procedure has low intraoperative and postoperative complication rates giving it a significant edge over other traditional treatment methods.
