The inability to fully close the eyelids and is caused by paralytic lagophthalmos (facial nerve paralysis), surgery, trauma. It can also occur during sleep. The condition exposes the cornea and can cause excessive evaporation of the tear film leading to dry eyes, ulceration, and infectious keratitis.
