Highly specialized, transparent cells that occupy ~10% of the corneal stroma that lie in-between the collagen lamellae and provide transparency, structure, proteoglycans, and stromal collagen to the cornea. They can help develop and maintain fine fibrils and play a repair phenotype role following injury.
