Inflammation that involves both the cornea (superficial cornea) and conjunctiva and caused by viral and bacterial infections, and toxic, allergic, and autoimmune etiologies, especially in adults. It causes less severe symptoms like pruritis, photophobia, eye discomfort, epiphora, and slight blurring of vision. However, when prolonged, it can cause limbal stem cell deficiency, symblepharon, conjunctival scarring, forniceal shortening, ptosis, corneal scarring, early cataract formation, and keratoconus.
