Aspiration involves the sculping and emulsification of the crystalline lens and subsequent suctioning of the aspirated particles using an ultrasonic handpiece or phaco probe in phacoemulsification. The remaining peripheral cortical matter is aspirated out using an irrigation-aspirator probe to leave the posterior capsule intact in readiness for artificial intraocular lens implantation.
