A muscle that contains fibers extending radially through the iris and involuntarily widens when available light decreases, dilating the pupil. The sympathetic nervous system stimulates pupillary, or iris dilation, and a malfunction of the nervous system can cause an abnormally small pupil, as in Horner syndrome.
