The pigmented, muscular, contractile circular structure suspended in the aqueous humor in front of the lens and ciliary body, perforated by the pupil. It consists of two types of muscles involved with dilation and contraction to control pupil size and determine the amount of light entering the iris. The color of the eye is determined by the amount of pigment in the iris.
