A thin, narrow, extraocular muscle in the orbit, innervated by cranial nerve III. It is the only extraocular muscle that doesn't originate from Zinn's annulus, but from the orbital surface of the maxilla, adjacent to the nasolacrimal groove. Its principal function is to extort, elevate, and abduct the eye in coordination with the rest of the extraocular muscles.
