A type of solution with extracellular fluid having a higher osmotic pressure or salt content than the cell’s cytoplasm or surrounding fluid. Osmosis causes water to diffuse out of a cell placed in a hypertonic solution causing the collapse of the cell due to dehydration. Examples of hypertonic solutions include saline solution, sodium chloride solution, corn syrup, and glucose.
