A technique where irrigation fluid is injected into the nucleus to separate the outer epinuclear shell from the more brittle, inner, central endonuclease substances leaving behind a ‘golden ring.’ The purpose is to limit the ultrasonic energy released during emulsification by briefly maintaining the epinuclear shell. It also prevents the capsular bag from tearing or dislocating which leads to occlusion of the phaco tip.
