A naturally occurring, unbranched glycosaminoglycan (GAG) or linear polymer present in the vitreous humor or extracellular matrix. It maintains a highly hydrated extracellular matrix tissue leading to cell adhesion and cell migration support. Any of the three hyaluronan synthases (HAS 1,2, and 3) synthesizes it.
