A branch of the dorsal ophthalmic artery in a developing fetus contained within the optic stalk. It extends from the central retinal artery through the vitreous cavity to the back of the crystalline lens. It supplies nutrients to the lens, but the artery atrophies a few weeks before birth such that a clear central zone in the vitreous humor (Cloquet’s canal) is created.
