A respiratory disease contracted by inhaling airborne Histoplasma capsulatum spores. The fungal spores are usually carried in dust and the lungs are the primary infection site. The fungus occurs worldwide on river valleys and in areas with soils rich in bird or bat droppings. In the US, it is frequently found in the ground and dust of the Mississippi-Ohio River Valley region and close to 62% of the adult inhabitants are carriers.
